Ask a Taipei person about supper and they name their own alley. A Sanchong person hears that and smiles — cross Taipei Bridge and the density of old-Taiwan flavour doubles while the bill shrinks. This is a working-class night: no glass towers, just a pot of braising liquid that has been simmering under a tin roof for decades.
Sanhe Night Market: the main theatre
Sanchong supper centres on Sanhe Night Market along Zhongyang North Road. Early evening belongs to shoppers; after ten the supper crowd takes over, and stalls run to around midnight — later on weekends.
What to eat? The old register: a black-and-white cut platter beside savory congee, braised pork rice glazed translucent, the sound of frying travelling from one end of the street to the other. We won’t pin down stall names — night-market turnover makes lists expire fast, and the locals’ queue is more accurate than any article.
Finish, then drift toward MRT Taipei Bridge station: the riverside is a short walk, and that stroll is the standard local digestif.
Drinking with it: Sanchong’s quiet izakaya strength
Few outsiders know Sanchong’s izakaya bench ranks near the top of New Taipei. On the Sanchong bar and izakaya list, Lao Chuan Jiao’s branch on Chongyang Road Section 3 carries five thousand reviews, with Qixidi on Ziqiang Road and Niaoyaki on Jiying Road drawing cross-river pilgrims. When supper wants to become a session, these run late enough.
For an actual cocktail, 1997Bar on Zhongyang North Road — a perfect five stars across a thousand-plus reviews — is the anomaly in this working-class district, and a fine way to close a date.
Wind-down and retreat
Fed and watered, Sanchong offers two endings. The walkers head for the riverside under Taipei Bridge — lamplight, night breeze, zero cost. The horizontal school finds a massage: Hongrentang and Bafangyue on Longmen Road are thousand-review neighbourhood institutions running late; more on the Sanchong massage list.
Watch the clock: the Zhonghe–Xinlu line’s last train leaves around midnight; after that, flag a taxi on Chongxin Road. And if the izakaya round happened, no scooters, no driving — a designated driver or cab is the only correct ending. No supper is worth gambling that stretch of road.
